let’s talk about pancakes

he wakes up like this every morning.
Bdog believes in breakfast and second breakfast and brunch if time allows.

Some early mornings I can’t fall back asleep. The covers are perfect and the stillness beckons but I find myself ready to say hello to the morning. Such as the case today. It’s also a glorious 45 degrees outside which makes me giddy. I put the kettle on for coffee and started making pancakes. Bdog thus deciding to forgive me for the early intrusion and assist as sous chef. I had considered donuts but ever since Katie Couric talked to me about sugar I can’t stop thinking through my choices. This is not to say I have shunned it entirely, I don’t do very well with such measures. Yet, I unintentionally find myself in bed at 5am considering a donut run and choosing a different albeit delicious path. While it’s easy to point a finger at Katie and her documentary, Fed Up, which I would highly recommend; the truth is this decision making really started when I met Garrett. I point my finger entirely at him for casually introducing a new train of thought beside my expressway of sugar delight. Thing of it is, I would have told you I didn’t eat a lot of sugar and I would have genuinely meant it. With the exception of my baking splurges and daily soda and those spontaneous sweet tooth rampages to Walgreens. See what I mean? It all adds up rather fast. And that only includes what I recognized at the time. It all really started with thinking about how the inside of our bodies function. There is so much emphasis on our outside appearance but the truth is we would all be better off taking a minute or two to focus on what our insides look like instead. That is my favorite part of getting a look inside the human eye. It’s a road map to what is going on in the body. You can tell all sorts of things, if someone has diabetes or high blood pressure or even get a round about guess at someone’s age even if you’ve never seen the person. Isn’t that the coolest thing? Yes, I am nerd. I digress.

The second thing that started my wheels turning was by beginning to read labels. You may have been doing this long before me, and if so, please teach me your ways. Otherwise I warn you not to unless you want to be thoroughly disturbed. Anyhow, I didn’t start this post intending to write about sugar.  It is a fascinating conversation though and I love talking about it. It’s important to note that I don’t do fear inside this conversation. I also don’t think someone is wiser or necessarily healthier than another person for being able to spout off facts or boast of using organic onion sunscreen. (Is there such a thing?) Hopefully you get my meaning. My remedial rule of thumb is to pay attention to what someone’s face or tone is saying when they aren’t aware. If that person has joy then I want to learn from them. In the words of  Elle Woods, “Endorphins make you happy. And happy people don’t shoot their husbands.”

If you don’t find that funny then I am really not sure my blog is for you. You had best scroll over to The Boston Globe and read something important. Otherwise you might be interested in my new favorite pancake recipe. I feel like I really should post a link to the video so credit where it is due can be given. I will have to ask Garrett who posted it. We are a bit addicted to watching cooking videos on YouTube. They rank right up there with Jimmy on our list. Let me just tell you, this recipe doesn’t require eggs (which is perfect if you’re trying to hold out for grocery day) nor does it require butter. I know it sounds like blasphemy, but trust me they taste like an ice cream cone and don’t have a pinch of sugar in them. Katie Couric and Elle Woods approved, I am sure of it.

Happy Weekend, friends!
